'Stump Speaking' by George Caleb Bingham 11”x14” Print
A print by George Caleb Bingham.
As a campaign progressed, candidates spoke to larger crowds at open-air forums. Sometimes they would stand on tree stumps to speak, and this is where we get the term “stump speaking.” Bingham’s image celebrates democracy, showing citizens of all classes participating in the process.
