No one merits the distinguished title of President Emeritus more than Elmer Ellis, who led the University of Missouri from 1954 to 1966. Elmer Ellis has been involved with higher education since his youth in North Dakota. During his career as the President of the University of Missouri, Ellis particularly had the vision – that is, the foresight based on that elusive and unique combination of intellect, experience, and common sense – to provide the leadership that is essential for a rapidly growing university. His contribution to the University of Missouri, in particular, and higher education, in general, have be immeasurable.

Upon his retirement of President of the University of Missouri, Ellis reflected upon and wrote about his life and career. This book is the result of that reminiscences. Educational and stimulation, it is also enjoyable reading for anyone who knows Ellis as a scholar, teacher, administrator, or friend. Based on his scholarship, teaching, and service, Elmer Ellis merits the title of President Emeritus and this publication of his autobiography conveys why he deserved such recognition.

About the Author

Elmer Ellis served as the president of the University of Missouri – Columbia from 1955-1966. He was the first president of the University of Missouri System. Ellis died in 1989, just before My Road to Emeritus was published. Ellis Library on the University of Missouri – Columbia campus is named in his honor.
